After visiting Zagreb, I started making my way back down to Plitvice. I was following the satnav, and hadn’t planned on stopping anywhere, but just after we left the motorway we were driving through Turanj, a suburb of the city of Karlovac. The person I was travelling with spotted some interesting looking military equipment in a park next to the road and pointed it out.

Before I knew it I’d driven past, but decided to turn around and go back to check it out. It turned out it was the Museum of the Croatian War of Independence, Turanj in a former backyard of a ruined Austro-Hungarian military base from 1991.

It is

one of only two Croatian military museums open for the public and contains a collection of old or destroyed military equipment from the Croatian War of Independence including tanks, artillery, a jet that was shot down, a MiG-21bis fighter jet mounted on a stand as well as the ruins of the base damaged in 1991. It was literally just a park to walk around – no entrance fee. It’s amazing that we almost drove past this place, I wouldn’t have spotted it and had no idea it was there – a very interesting place.

After looking around the museum, it was back to the car to carry on the journey to Plitvice Lakes.
